Living in a world where everything is in a constant change each day, we look for ways to adapt and take care of things as quickly as possible in order to jump to the next thing. We get so obsessed with finishing things that we forget to enjoy the process and take as much from it that we can.
Setting doable goals
People often times set goals, that even they don’t believe they could achieve and then they wonder why they fail. If your goal is to make a lot of money next year you probably shouldn’t pick too big of an amount such as 750.000 (unless you get into some illegal stuff), but rather go for something smaller like 100.000 that is more in your reach. Of course you shouldn’t limit your goals and dreams by what others think or make you think is possible, but it’s not necessary to go overboard from the beginning. By doing that it will be less likely to fail and you won’t be discouraged to move forward.
Baby step it
As mentioned in the previous paragraph you should set the pace according to you. You wont always be able to spend exactly as much time on something as you wished to, but that is ok because you can never predict what might happen. Be it your friends invite you unexpectedly for a drink after work or something popped up and you need to take care of it right away. It’s not always the amount of time that we spend that matters, but rather the doing itself.
You usually play the guitar for 1 hour each day ,but you’re short on time today ? Play for 30 minutes or 15 minutes. You will still be a little bit better tomorrow than if you hadn’t played at all. By baby-stepping our goals the sense of achievement is greater and thus we keep ourselves motivated for longer.
Don’t compare yourself to others
If there is one way you could bum yourself out, it is by comparing yourself to others. Every person progresses at different pace and so do you. Taking more time to learn something or develop a certain skill doesn’t always mean that you are worse than someone or that you will never get where you want to be. In fact the only person you want to be comparing yourself with is yourself. It doesn’t matter if something takes you months or years go achieve,as long as you move forward everyday even if its 1% a day.
Surround yourself with people that will push you to your best.
If you only hang out with people that procrastinate, whine about their problems and aren’t doing anything with their lives, you will probably end up doing the very same thing.
Surrounding yourself with people, that have that same goals as you and are/have been on the path that you are, will highly increase your chances of bettering yourself and help you get through hard times. Some people look for mentors, others look for people that are a little more advanced than them, the important thing is to find someone that is already where you want to be.
